The Department of Physics at the University of Crete organizes an annual postgraduate program lasting one year, which leads to the acquisition of a Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization in “Advanced Physics”.

Graduates of the program can apply and, if accepted, continue their studies for another 3 years in order to obtain a Doctoral Diploma in one of the offered specializations.

The MSc Advanced Physics is an intensive, research-led program with a separate focus on:

  • a) Astrophysics and Space Physics
  • b) Condensed Matter and Atomic Physics
  • c) Theoretical High Energy Physics and Cosmology

You will learn about advanced topics in the area of your choice by selecting suitable courses.

You will be exposed to a wide range of research techniques and will have the opportunity to conduct and write up your own project under the supervision of well-known researchers in the field.

The curriculum includes a series of general physics postgraduate courses, specialized courses that cover all areas of modern physics, and overlap with the research interests and activities of the department’s professors and researchers.

Completion of the studies requires the preparation of a Master’s Thesis.

The subject of the Master’s Thesis must be related to cutting-edge issues of modern physics in the fields of Astrophysics and Space Physics, Elementary Particle Physics and Cosmology, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Applied Physics – Semiconductor Physics and Technology.

The state-of-the-art research infrastructure facilities of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation for Research and Technology as well as the Skinakas Observatory are available to all postgraduate students of the Department.

The M.S. courses are taught in English and the M.S. Thesis is required to be written in English.
