Summer School in Regenerative Medicine

1–3 July 2026 | Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Organized by the Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine & the University of Crete

The University of Crete is pleased to welcome participants to the Summer School in Regenerative Medicine, taking place from 1 to 3 July 2026 in Heraklion. This three‑day programme brings together leading scientists, young researchers, and students for an intensive training experience in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of biomedical science.

Designed to combine theoretical foundations, hands‑on laboratory training, and exposure to real‑world clinical and regulatory environments, the Summer School offers a unique opportunity to engage with cutting‑edge developments in stem cell biology, advanced therapies, and translational research.

🌱 Day 1 — Fundamentals

Wednesday, 1 July 2026

The opening day focuses on the core principles of stem cell science. Morning lectures introduce participants to:

  • Embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
  • Hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells: isolation, characterization, and properties
  • Neural stem cells: cultivation and genetic manipulation

The afternoon is dedicated to hands‑on training, including:

  • Stem cell and iPSC culture, organoid models, and drug‑testing applications
  • “Omics” technologies, bioinformatics, and AI‑based data analysis
  • A guided visit to the Public Cord Blood Bank of Crete
  • An introduction to biomaterials for regenerative applications

The day concludes with a networking dinner, offering participants the chance to connect with faculty and peers.

🧬 Day 2 — Cutting‑Edge Innovations & Regulatory Aspects

Thursday, 2 July 2026

The second day explores emerging technologies and the regulatory frameworks shaping the future of advanced therapies. Sessions include:

  • Biomaterials for stem cell applications
  • Biobanking, bioethics, and regulatory considerations
  • Clinical trial design for advanced therapeutic medicinal products (ATMPs)

Hands‑on modules continue with:

  • Stem cell and iPSC culture
  • Bioinformatics and AI tools
  • Biomaterial fabrication and micro‑fabrication of porous scaffolds
  • A second visit to the GMP‑grade biobank facilities

A networking dinner closes the day.

🧪 Day 3 — Translating Stem Cell Science to Clinical and Industrial Applications

Friday, 3 July 2026

The final day highlights the translational potential of human iPSC technologies. Morning sessions focus on:

  • iPSC‑based drug development
  • Clinical applications of human stem cell models

Participants will also take part in oral and poster presentations, showcasing their work and engaging in scientific exchange.

The programme concludes with an afternoon visit to archaeological sites in Heraklion, offering a cultural experience alongside scientific training.
