As part of the Summer School “Nature and Culture in Crete, from Antiquity to
the Present,” organized by K.E.L.KI.P. (Center for Ancient Greek and Chinese
Civilization) and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete, a theatrical
performance titled “The Great Confucianist Zhang Zai” was hosted under the
July full moon at the “Shepherd’s Place” amphitheater in Anogeia.
The performance, directed and performed by students of the Summer School
from Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an, introduced the audience of Crete to
the philosophy of Zhang Zai (1020-1077), a disciple of Confucius and founder
of the Guanxue School.
Members of the Academic Community of the University of Crete, residents,
and representatives of local Authorities and Cultural Organizations attended
the performance. They delivered greetings, exchanged wishes for similar
future actions, and gifts with the Chinese Delegation.
The Municipality of Anogeia supported the action by providing the venue for
the performance, and the local cultural association Androidus Project Tank
facilitated the preparation of the performance and hosted the participants.
The Laboratory “Visual Anthropology: Image, Music, Text” of the Center for
Research and Studies of the University of Crete contributed to the video
recording/photography and Greek subtitling of the performance.
