On July 14, 2025, the University of Crete proudly launched its 1st Summer School in Forensic Anthropology, welcoming 18 participants from 12 countries to its School of Medicine in Heraklion.
PRESS RELEASE: UOC SUMMER SCHOOL IN FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY
On Monday, July 14, 2025, the School of Medicine of the University of Crete had the pleasure of welcoming 18 international participants to the 1st Summer School in Forensic Anthropology (THE UOC FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY FIELDSCHOOL).
The Summer School, co-organized with the University’s Forensic Medicine Unit under the scientific supervision of Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine, Dr. Elena Kranioti, will take place at the School of Medicine between July 14 and 29, 2025.
Throughout the program, lectures will be delivered by members of the University of Crete’s academic community as well as internationally renowned researchers in the fields of Osteology and Forensic Anthropology. In addition, the Cretan Osteological Collection of the University of Crete will be utilized to cultivate practical skills related to the handling and examination of skeletal remains (biological profile assessment, diagnosis of skeletal pathology, etc.).
On the opening day, participants were introduced to the scientific activities of the Forensic Medicine Unit. Moreover, for the first time before an international audience, the groundbreaking Virtual Reality application VR AUTOPSY was presented, serving as an educational simulator of the autopsy process.
The participants come from 12 different countries across and beyond Europe (Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Portugal, United Kingdom, Philippines, Germany, Mexico, Serbia, France, Australia, Greece), highlighting the multicultural dimension of the program and enhancing the international visibility and reputation of the University of Crete.
