A major institutional distinction has been achieved with the official approval by the Center for the Greek Language for the operation of a Greek Language Proficiency Certification Examination Center at the University of Crete. The Center for the Greek Language is the national authority responsible for certifying Greek language proficiency and grants approval to institutions that teach Greek as a foreign language. The approval is valid for one year and is automatically renewed.
The examinations will be hosted at the Laboratory of Language Development and Language Processing of the Department of Philology in Rethymno (Gallos Campus of the University of Crete) during the May 2026 examination period, and will include both written and oral exams.
The operation of a Greek Language Certification Center at the University of Crete substantially strengthens the University’s international presence and outward-looking strategy, offering international students, researchers, and interested candidates the opportunity to obtain official certification of their Greek language skills, in line with the internationally recognized standards of the Center for the Greek Language.
This approval is part of the broader role of the University of Crete as an academic institution that actively supports the promotion of the Greek language and culture, as well as the enhancement of academic mobility.
