Theater Workshop in the frame of the Winter School “Crete at a Crossroads of Civilizations: On the Origins of Writing and Written Law”

Is it fair to be punished for sharing knowledge?
When does law turn into power?
How much does freedom cost?

As part of the international Winter School “Crete at a Crossroads of Civilizations: On the Origins of Writing and Written Law” (KELKIP), with the participation of students from universities in China, the Experimental Senior High School of Rethymno – University of Crete organized and carried out a theater workshop on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Rethymno University Campus, centered on the myth of Prometheus.

Through theatrical games, drama techniques, and storytelling, the teachers and students of the Theater and Music Education Club of the Experimental Senior High School of Rethymno – UoC presented different ways of bringing the myth to life and worked collaboratively with the university students on the boundaries between law, freedom, and justice.

This activity complemented the lecture by Associate Professor Athina Kavoulaki, titled “Law in Ancient Greek Tragedy,” which had taken place earlier that same day.

Special thanks are due to Maria Manioudaki, Kassandra Beikaki, and Maria Polaki, philologists at the Experimental Senior High School of Rethymno – UoC, for their inspiration, excellent organization, and the warm, open spirit with which they welcomed the students from China. The members of the Club, with generosity and meaningful participation, showed in practice how theater can become a shared language and a truly authentic meeting point.

This combined activity will be repeated on Thursday, February 5, with a second group of students from the Experimental Senior High School of Rethymno – UoC and a second group of university students from China.
