International Children’s Book Day

Apr 2, 2026 | News, News

International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated each year on April 2, around the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, since 1967. Its purpose is to inspire a love of reading and highlight the importance of children’s literature.

Each year, a different National Section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) acts as the international sponsor of ICBD. The host country selects a theme and invites a prominent author to write a message to children worldwide, and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are widely used to promote books and reading in schools, libraries, and through media channels. ICBD celebrations often include special events such as author and illustrator visits, writing competitions, and book award announcements.
