Summer Course: History of Psychology (with COIL Component)

May 18, 2026 | News

The history of psychology is often presented solely as a story of scientific progress. However, this perspective overlooks the important ways psychology has been shaped by sociopolitical events, cross-cultural encounters, and interdisciplinary exchange.

This course examines psychology as a human and cultural activity that emerged within specific historical contexts and under diverse social influences, rather than as a purely universal scientific discipline. Students will explore how developments in psychology have been connected to issues such as war, migration, education, philosophy, and cultural change across different societies and time periods.

The course will also include a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) component, an innovative educational approach designed to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration among students from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

Instructor: Prof. David Manier, Department of Psychology, Lehman College, City University of New York (CUNY)
