Crete is the biggest and southernmost Greek island and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The largest city is Heraklion, followed by Chania and Rethymno. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.
It has a rich history, dating back to the Minoan civilization – considered the oldest in Greece. In fact, Crete is often referred to as the “cradle of European civilizations”.
There are several Universities at the island that allow an opportunity for collaboration on a broad range. University of Crete is located at Heraklion and Rethymnon, and Hellenic Mediterranean University located at Heraklion with several departments located at Agios Nikolaos and Sitia, as well as Technical University of Crete located at Chania. There are number of research institutes like FORTH (Foundation for research and technology Hellas) and HCMR (Hellenic Center for Marine Biology).
There are six bigger cities on the island that are well connected by an extensive bus system with regular services across the north of the island and from north to south. There are two regional bus stations in Heraklion. Bus routes and timetables can be found on KTEL website bus lines.
