Regional Research Ecosystem

UoC is part of an ecosystem of academic and research institutes active in Crete. Research and research training at all levels benefit from the synergies and collaborations developed over 30 years with the Institutes of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PagNi)

Customized advisory support is also available to outgoing researchers.

UoC Research Fund Management

Research funds are managed through a grants office known as the Special Account for Research Funds (ELKE), established and run according to Ministerial regulations common to all HEIs in Greece. Grant fund management and associated policy are overseen by the University’s and administered by the Financial & Administrative Support Unit. This Unit, with the support of legal services, manages the contractual, procedural, administrative, financial accounting, and employment aspects of grant management in collaboration with the projects’ Principal Investigators.

A University Research independent unit focused in the areas of Nuclear and Plasma Physics but since 2008 it targets primarily research in Theoretical and Computational Physics.

Finokalia Atmospheric Observatory

FKL, a monitoring station of the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere, operated by the Environmental Chemical Processes Laboratory (ECPL) of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete

Museums

Natural History Museum of Crete

The NHMC is a pioneering institute in study and management of the natural environment in Crete, Greece and the wider Eastern Mediterranean, with public education and outreach on environmental issues as core activities.

Museum of Ancient Eleutherna

This is an archaeological site museum, created to house the results of excavations in the ancient city of Eleutherna. The Museum’s Research Centre, open to scholars from around the world, is dedicated to the study of the Eleutherna excavations, Crete, and Mediterranean history and archaeology

Museum of Medicine

The Museum acts as a centre for the preservation, research and promotion of the History of Medicine from antiquity to the present day. The permanent exhibition alongside public events cover the history of medicine in Crete, medicinal herbs, public health, medical instruments, and medicine in art.

Museum of Education

The Museum preserves exhibits, studies, and publicly promotes the educational school background and the history of the teaching profession during the period of Modern Greek history. Exhibits include rare evidence from the Heraklion Pedagogical Academy and school artefacts from the 18th to 20th centuries.

Innovation

The University’s Research Management Committee has recently established a Technology Transfer Office to promote and support the development of innovative research by the University’s researchers and students that has promise as knowledge-based products and services.  This includes advice and support on management of intellectual property, partnerships, and seed funding.  The TTO is organizing seminars, workshops, and networking events to inform students and research staff on the pathways to realizing the socio-economic benefits of IP assets.

 

In accordance with the University regulations on the management and exploitation of intellectual property arising from UoC research activity, the TTO coordinates with the University’s Property Development and Management Company to develop IP with commercial potential.   The Property Development and Management Company currently participates in a number of spin-off companies including Bionature E.A. Limited, Gnosis Data Analysis ΙΚΕ, and Σύγχρονα Αμφιαράεια.

Research Ethics

In 2012 the University of Crete established a Research Ethics Committee (REC). UoC was something of a pioneer at that time in having an institutional REC. This was made a standard requirement for all Greek public HEIs in 2018 [Law 4521/2018 ss21-27] and the UoC REC was re-constituted accordingly.

The University initiated a series of research awards in 2013 to recognize and promote outstanding work (1) by young researchers and (2) by established academic staff (Senate 312/21.03.2013). These initiatives were the direct result of the University’s commitment to the Human Resources Strategy for Research (HRS4R) process.
