The University of Crete successfully concluded the 1st Summer School in Regenerative Medicine, held from July 1–5, 2026, at its School of Medicine. The program brought together early-career researchers, clinicians, and students to explore recent advances in stem cell technologies and their applications in regenerative medicine.
The University welcomed 25 participants from six countries to Heraklion for an intensive week of learning and scientific exchange focused on one of the fastest-evolving areas of contemporary biomedical research.
The Summer School was jointly organized by the Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine and the University of Crete. The academic program combined lectures by distinguished scientists with hands-on laboratory training in the specialized facilities of the School of Medicine and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, enabling participants to connect theoretical knowledge with laboratory practice.
Throughout the week, the Summer School fostered an international and interdisciplinary learning environment that encouraged scientific dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among participants and faculty.
The final day of the program included the presentation of Travel Grants to participants whose applications were recognized for their academic merit. The academic component concluded with a poster session, during which participants presented their research and exchanged ideas with faculty members and fellow attendees.
Following the academic program, participants took part in a guided tour of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the city’s historic center, offering an opportunity to experience Crete’s cultural heritage. Special thanks are extended to tour guide Nektaria Mavroudi for her excellent guidance and contribution to this memorable experience.
The Summer School reflected the collaborative efforts of the University of Crete, the Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine, the members of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, and the Society’s sponsors. Their support made it possible to offer the program free of tuition and to award eight Travel Grants to participants.
Administrative coordination and operational support for the Summer School were provided by the University of Crete Welcome Office, contributing to the successful implementation of this international educational initiative.
