May 18, 2026 | News

Today, on International Museum Day, we honor the institutions that preserve memory, inspire curiosity, and connect science, history, and culture across generations.

On this special day, we invite you to discover the museums affiliated with the University of Crete:

🏺 Museum of Ancient Eleutherna
Did you know? This unique archaeological museum was created to house discoveries from a single excavation site, showcasing more than 3,500 years of Cretan history in the very landscape where it was uncovered.

🦎 Natural History Museum of Crete
Did you know? Housed in a beautifully restored and recently renovated former power station by the sea, the museum is one of the most important centers for biodiversity research and environmental education in the Eastern Mediterranean.

⚕️ Museum of Medicine (hosted in Voutes Campus, Medical School)
This year, the Museum of Medicine celebrates 10 years since its founding and the beginning of its operation. Over the past decade, it has highlighted the fascinating journey of medicine from antiquity to the present day.

To mark this special anniversary and International Museum Day, the Museum od Medicine is hosting a public event today at 19:00 at the Androgeo Building of the Municipality of Heraklion, focusing on the history and significance of psychiatric reform.

Happy International Museum Day! 🌍✨
