International students and researchers from the University of Crete explored the island’s culture, history, gastronomy and music through a unique cultural excursion organized by the Welcome Office.

On March 11, 2026, the Welcome Office of the University of Crete organized a cultural excursion that brought together international students, researchers and professors from both campuses of the University of Crete in Heraklion and Rethymno.

The excursion offered a wonderful opportunity for members of the university’s international community to meet, connect and experience the authentic culture and traditions of Crete together, strengthening the bonds between international students across the two campuses.

Participants explored some of the island’s most iconic cultural sites, including the historic Archanes–Spilia region and the Palace of Knossos.

At Knossos, participants enjoyed a guided tour by Athanasios Mailis, Professor of History and Archaeology, who generously shared his knowledge and insights into the Minoan civilization and the historical significance of the archaeological site.
We warmly thank Professor Mailis for offering this enriching and inspiring guided tour.

As part of the excursion, participants also visited Paterianakis Estate, where they had the opportunity to learn about the traditional process of Cretan wine production and enjoy a tasting of selected local wines.

The day continued at Koronekes Olive Mill, a traditional olive oil mill located in the countryside of the Heraklion region. Participants experienced authentic Cretan hospitality through a guided tour of the olive oil production facilities and an olive oil tasting experience.

The program also included live cooking of traditional Cretan dishes by a professional chef, while local musicians performed traditional Cretan music, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere. Surrounded by olive groves, participants had the opportunity to relax, socialize and exchange experiences.

Through experiences like this, the University of Crete continues to foster a welcoming and vibrant international community, offering students and researchers the opportunity to connect with each other while discovering the culture and traditions of the island.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this day such a memorable experience!
