In September 2026, the University of Crete took part for the first time in the Empowering Equity Academy, an initiative of the European Investment Bank (EIB). The University was represented by Maria Mavridi, a graduate student in the MSc Neurosciences program, who joined young women from across Europe, first online and then in person in Luxembourg.

The Academy aims to empower women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and sustainability, with a special focus on venture capital and private equity. Through a free, specialized program that combines live online sessions with experts from the European Investment Fund (EIF), in-person activities, and networking with leading fund managers across Europe, participants get an inside look at how Europe’s private equity market works.

For Maria Mavridi, the Academy was her first step into the world of investment and innovation. In her own words:

“My participation in the Empowering Equity Academy 2026, an initiative of the European Investment Bank Institute, was a truly valuable experience. Coming from a scientific background in Chemistry and Neuroscience, I was particularly interested in exploring the world of investment, entrepreneurship, and innovation from a different perspective.

Through the online sessions and the in-person program in Luxembourg, I gained new knowledge, worked on real-life case studies, and connected with people from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. Most importantly, the experience encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and explore new career paths.

I am also very grateful to the University of Crete for actively promoting opportunities like this. It is great to see the University encouraging students to broaden their horizons and gain experiences beyond their academic curriculum.”

Taking part in the Academy reflects the University of Crete’s ongoing commitment to connecting its students with international training, networking, and career development opportunities. Every year, the EIB Institute runs programs such as the Empowering Equity Academy and the EIB Summer School, and University of Crete students have already taken part in both.

These opportunities are open to all University of Crete students. Interested students are encouraged to follow the University’s website and social media channels so they don’t miss the next call for applications.
